RollWack

Click on the image on at left to download and play a video [504 Kb] of a partial span Trick RC Zagi-THL coming across the back side and climbing through the shear boundary in a roll. Then it gets wacked by a bigger model, which can be a problem for such a light model. This is just a light tap in very light wind, however, so all is well. Notice how the roll seems to gain energy and then hover at the end, as if just hanging in space. This change in ground speed from the back side into the free stream head wind of the slope lift plays strange visual games for anyone not aware of the motion of the different air masses above and below the shear boundary. Can the same type of Dynamic Soaring be done down wind of trees or a building? You bet.
